Veteran Found Dead Outside Assisted Living Facility

Norman Wagner, 87, of Racine was found dead this morning outside the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove after he exited through an outside door that automatically locks.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. this morning, a nursing supervisor found Mr. Wagners body outside of the facility wearing only a t-shirt, pants and slippers. The Racine County Medical Examiner has said that Wagner apparently locked himself outside the back of the building and tried several doors to get back inside but could not make his way to the unlocked doors in the front of the building.

According to Andy Schuster, spokesperson for the state Department of Veterans Affairs, many of the facility's residents live independently, but Wagner had a standing request for staff to check in on him at night.
