Jens Lee, the longtime administrator of New London Specialty Care in Henry County has decided to surrender his license. This devision comes after facing accusations of failing to protect residents at the facility from abuse.
According to state records, Lee was the administrator at New London from at least 2006 to 2022. Lee is 51 years old.
The Iowa Board of Nursing Home Administrators has not released a formal statement of charges. However, documents reveal that he acknowledged the board’s concerns about not taking appropriate steps to protect the facility’s residents from abuse. However, these documents do not reveal the nature of the abuse or when such incidents occurred.
Lee’s decision comes after New London Specialty Care was cited for 24 state and federal regulatory violations in December 2022. These infractions included failing to:
The inspection report painted a disturbing picture, alleging that a male resident of the facility sexually abused two female residents. The report detailed the abusive resident’s inappropriate sexual advances toward other residents, as well as staff. This individual also gained unauthorized entry into female residents’ rooms and committed physical assaults.
The facility received additional criticism for its overall poor quality of care, consistant shortage of competent nursing staff, and poor training of staff members. The federal government responded to these findings by imposing $42,180 in fines.
Currently, New London Specialty Care has a one-star rating for its overall quality and health inspections from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This is the lowest possible score.
