According to WisDOT, 239 people have been killed in Wisconsin auto accidents thus far this year, compared to 207 people who were killed this time last year.
Overall, traffic fatalities are down. Last year there were a total of 496 traffic fatalities, which is the lowest number of deaths for the state in over 70 years. WisDOT hopes to keep that all-time low and prevent further increases.
Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Nate Henriksen, says that many of these deaths are preventable, and that is why the state is asking all motorists to take an active role in making roads safer. A few things you can do include:
The Department says that more than half of Wisconsin traffic fatalities occur when vehicles run off the road.
To combat this, the Department is planning to add more rumble strips along highways. These strips can warn driver when they are drifting out of their lane, and will hopefully alert distracted, drunk and drowsy drivers who tend to drift in and out of their lanes most.
We encourage everyone to take an active role in driving safely and helping to prevent common types of auto accidents.
