GM notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in a letter last February that a combination of factors could move the switch out of the run position and result in vehicle air bags not deploying during a crash.
In a written statement issued last May, the NHTSA said that GM had agreed to pay a $35 million civil penalty for not reporting the vehicle safety defect quickly enough.
GM provides recall information on two websites: GM Ignition Update and GM Recall Center.
Consumers can use GM Ignition Update to find information on vehicle brands containing the faulty ignition switch. Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Saturn are the brands listed on the site.
The automakers other recall website, GM Recall Center, enables vehicle owners to use a VIN number to conduct recall searches.
