The AP (3/5, Thomas, Manning) reports that NHTSA said yesterday that it has received more than 60 complaints from Toyota drivers who say their cars have sped up by themselves even after being fixed to correct the problem.
The agency is contacting every owner to learn more about the consumer reports, none of which have been independently verified.
We are determined to get to the bottom of this, NHTSA administrator David Strickland said in a statement.
The AP reports that these complaints raise questions about whether Toyotas repairs will prevent reports of sudden unintended acceleration or if there could be electronic causes behind the safety issues.
Bloomberg News (3/5, Hughes, Cook) reports that Rep. Bart Stupak said that consumers should feel not very safe driving Toyotas.
You really dont know when its going to occur and thats the uncertainty which should cause safety concerns, Stupak, a Michigan Democrat and chairman of a House subcommittee probing Toyota, said today in an interview on Bloomberg Television. I dont think yet they have an answer, Stupak said of the Toyota City, Japan-based automaker, the worlds largest. Theres a glitch in either the computer, the software or the electronic system, and they havent been able to narrow it down.
However, Toyota spokesman Ed Lewis took issue, saying that unintended acceleration is not an issue unique to Toyota, pointing to Representative Darrell Issas request yesterday to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood asking for an industrywide solution.
