Voice Activated Systems Distract Drivers, Too

When thinking about distracted driving, many of us dont consider that our vehicles could be one of the distractions putting us in danger. Meant to offer convenience and improve safety, new studies show that voice activated car systems are actually causing distraction.

Distraction Even After Interaction

After interacting with voice activated car systems, drivers need time to reorient. New research shows that such systems can be complicated, taking a drivers focus off of driving for up to 27 seconds after ending interactions with the system. Even uncomplicated systems remove the drivers focus from the road for as many as 15 seconds after disengagement.

Misleading Benefits

Automakers tout voice-activated technology as a safer alternative to talking on the phone or texting, which require hands to leave the wheel. Technology companies even offer apps targeted at drivers. These systems are often included as pricey vehicle add-ons, giving manufacturers an incentive to push potentially unsafe technology.

Misleading messages are being sent to drivers stating that using this technology is safe and acceptable. According to University of Utah neuroscientist Dr. David Strayer, such systems create a great distraction, ranging in intensity based on the complexity of the system. The mental challenges relating to disengaging from voice activated systems appear to be harsher in drivers over 50.

Distracting Voice Activated Systems

Through his study, Dr. Strayer found that voice activated systems requiring the most mental energy include the Microsoft Cortana and systems present in the Mazda 6 and in Hyundai, Nissan, Volkswagen and Chrysler models. Apples Sri was found to cause high distraction. The voice activated system included in the Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Equinox were found to be moderately distracting to drivers.
