According to Ford, an intermittent electrical connection in the steering gear could potentially disable the power steering functions and shift the vehicle into manual mode. This makes the vehicle significantly more difficult to steer and control, especially at slower speeds.
Ford has said that it is aware of four accidents that are linked to the issue but has received no reports of any injuries as a result of the defect.
However, documents filed with regulators reference reports from dealers and insurance companies of more than 30 incidents of vehicles hitting, poles, curbs, guardrails and other objects because of locked steering. Some owners have even complained of sore backs and shoulders from trying to steer.
