GM Orders Recall Update for More Than 160,000 Pickup Trucks at Risk for Brake Failure

General Motors (GM) has issued an update to a recall repair after between 1,600 and 1,700 owners of GM pickup trucks complained about electronic brake failure. The recall update affects approximately 160,000 GM customers whose vehicles’ brakes may be in danger of failing.

An owner of a 2019 GMC Sierra Denali said his electronic braking system failed for the first time earlier this month after he took the car in for the recall repair. The only way the owner could get his vehicle to stop was to stand on the brake pedal while waiting for the truck to coast to a standstill.

Vehicles Potentially Affected By GM’s New Recall

The original recall was for almost 550,000 2019 Cadillac CT6 sedans, GMC Sierra 1500s and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup trucks.

GM has sent letters to the owners of all vehicles affected, but you can always use your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to check for outstanding recalls of your specific vehicle on the NHTSA website.

Cause For GM’s Electronic Braking Failure

MSN News reports the brake failures are due to a problematic software update that was provided for the previous recall. According to GM, the first recall was issued because a software error had the potential to disable the electronic stability control and antilock brake systems.

However, the fix that was applied to affected vehicles has the potential to disrupt the electronic brake control component whenever the driver starts his or her GM vehicle with the OnStar app.

Despite this additional recall, GM states that it is confident this revised fix will resolve the problem. Spokesman, Dan Flores encourages customers to contact their dealers if they have ongoing concerns, but “we have a fix to the fix that we’re sure will take care of the problem.”
