A $1 million settlement was reached on behalf of the family of a 28-year-old New Richmond man in a wrongful death case against the St. Croix County Jail.
The lawsuit stems from the March 18 , 2007 incident when authorities found Brandon Hessler unresponsive in his cell.
Hessler was jailed after allegedly breaking into his mothers home and attempting to steal prescription medication.
He was then placed on medical watch after demonstrating signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance, according to jail staff.
An autopsy showed Hessler appeared to have taken an over-the-counter pain medication, which probably caused his death.
The family alleged jail staff and medical personnel failed to provide Hessler with proper medical care.
