Milwaukee police are warning drivers about a new form of carjacking that is taking place on the south side of the city. Thieves in the area have used a new tactic called a bumper tap to steal cars during a series of incidents in the last week.
A bumper tap occurs when a carjacker pulls up behind another vehicle and rear-ends it. As the driver gets out of the vehicle to assess the damage, a passenger in the rear vehicle jumps into the drivers seat and drives off with the victims car.
If you or someone you love falls victim to this type of theft, call the office of Pitman, Kalkhoff, Sicula & Dentice, S.C. at 414-333-3333 for a free consultation to get you the justice you deserve.
According to police, six vehicles were targeted in this fashion in the last week. All of the incidents occurred on lesser-traveled roads after 7 p.m. and all of the victims were women. Only one was harmed physically after she was pushed to the ground.
Law enforcement officials have stated that they have one suspect in custody, but are on the lookout for more. They believe that most of the suspects are younger males.
Motorists are advised to be cautious if someone or multiple people other than the driver get out of a vehicle after a rear-end accident. If this does happen, police recommend locking your car doors, talking through a partially cracked window and asking the person to move to a more public place like a parking lot, police or fire station that is more highly populated and likely to have camera footage.
The personal injury attorneys at Pitman, Kalkhoff, Sicula & Dentice, S.C. encourage all motorists, especially women, to be careful while driving and to be prepared in the case that a bumper tap does occur.
