The 85-year-old woman has been a resident of Casa Real Health Center for several years. According to police, the woman reported that a man came into her room and assaulted her on top of her bed.
A few days later, the woman reported the incident to police and went to the hospital for an exam. As soon as the nursing home found out about the incident, staffers set up the doctor’s appointment. Police have indicated that the woman’s body showed no signs of injury and trauma.
She was not able to identify the man because she is blind. Family members have also reported that she has dementia.

Casa Real is owned by Preferred Care Partners Management Group L.P., located in Plano, Texas. The privately held company is one of the nation’s largest nursing home chains, with locations in at least 10 states. It also runs four of the seven New Mexico facilities with the worst quality scores on Nursing Home Compare.
In December 2014, New Mexico’s attorney general filed a lawsuit against the company for inadequate care. The lawsuit alleged that understaffing made it impossible for the facilities to provide acceptable care.
The case included confidential witnesses from the nursing homes alleging that there often were not enough staff working to help residents with important tasks like eating and drinking.
One confidential witness was the daughter of a patient at Casa Real. She said that she regularly found her father unattended, un-bathed and claiming that he was hungry.
The staff said they did not have enough time to tend to him so she took it upon herself to visit every day to bathe and feed him herself, tasks which the facility was being paid to do.
