Pressure sores can develop in many places on the body, but most commonly occur on the backs of a patient’s arms, legs, shoulder blades, hips and tailbone. These sores develop when there is constant pressure on a part of the body, reducing blood flow to that area. Left long enough, the surrounding tissue in the area dies. For instance, when a resident is constantly being left to sit in one position for hours without being moved. These sores are extremely painful and will continue to worsen without treatment. In severe cases, they can be fatal.
