The study found a dramatic decline in the quality of the states roads over the last several years. Only 11 years ago, Wisconsin roads ranked 22^nd in the nation for quality.

That deterioration costs drivers more than twice the national average in car maintenance, tire wear and accelerated deterioration. Specifically:

• The poor condition of Milwaukee roads cost drivers $700 a year in extra vehicle repairs.
• Madison roads cost drivers an additional $615 every year.
• The national average for car maintenance is $377 per year.

The cost to the three major industries in Wisconsin manufacturing, farming and transportation is also significant. The study warned that if the states roads are not improved, the effects could impair Wisconsins recovery from the Great Recession, which has already been slow. It claims that companies considering moving to Wisconsin will most likely opt for other locations with a better infrastructure.

The study blames state budget cuts and slashed allocation of funds dedicated to repairing state and local highways. The lack of attention these roads have received has left less than half with a rating of good and the majority with countless potholes and serious needs for repairs.
