During the summer season, millions of people across the U.S. enjoy the thrill of water vessels and over a million ATVs. Unfortunately, these summer recreational activities can sometimes cause serious accidents and severe or fatal injuries.
In 2021, there were 658 boating deaths and an additional 2,641 people who suffered injuries.
We encourage you to enjoy your summer but take a few minutes to read our PKSD Newsletter. This month focuses on reducing summer accident risks while enjoying your jet skis, boats and ATVs.
Boating Safety Tips
Whether you have been boating for years or are a first-time operator, lack of planning and attention to boating safety can quickly get you into trouble. If you carry passengers or boat near other vessels, it is important to remember that you are responsible for the safety of others as well.
Consider these boat safety tips, which can help to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries:
Invest in a boating course: Get some boating education and experience before going out alone or taking others with you. It will give you more confidence and help minimize the risk of a crash.
Vessel safety checkup: Similar to getting your vehicle inspected for safety issues, it is important to do the same for your water vessel. You can request an appointment via a mobile app and the inspection is completely free.
Make a plan: Plan a route and check out weather conditions ahead of time. Do not go out when hazardous weather is expected. Also, let someone else (on land) know about the route you plan to take. This can be useful if you run into trouble and the Coast Guard needs to know where to start looking for you.
Use life jackets: Even experienced and strong swimmers have to be rescued in certain conditions. Get a life jacket that fits properly and wear it. Trying to grab and put on a life jacket when something goes wrong is risky.
Jet Ski Safety Tips
Jet skiing is a fun summer water sport, but it can also be extremely dangerous if safety is ignored. Some important jet ski safety tips include:
Keeping the jet ski safety lanyard hooked to your life jacket or around your wrist at all times
Wearing your life jacket and making sure it is properly fitted
Paying attention to boating etiquette, such as not turning too sharply near another vessel
Keeping a close eye out for swimmers, downed water skiers and others in the water
Learning how to operate and stop your jet ski before taking it out
Paying attention and not going out in unsafe weather conditions
Safety Tips for ATV Enthusiasts
For those who prefer land over water, ATVs are a lot of fun. However, they can also be dangerous if safety is ignored.
ATVs might seem like a harmless vehicle to ride, but you can suffer or cause serious harm if you ignore precautions or drive recklessly.
Educate yourself about the right gear and wear it
Follow safety rules, and ride during daylight hours on designated trails
Avoid speeding or reckless behavior at all times
Let someone know where you will be in case you run into trouble
