AAA Releases Wisconsin Drunk Driving Statistics

More than 40 percent of drivers in Wisconsin admit to having operated a vehicle within two hours of having multiple drinks, according to a recent study conducted by AAA.

The study, based on information provided by Wisconsin residents 21-years or older, also found that roughly one in five people between the ages of 21 and 34 admit to driving directly after consuming alcohol.

Half of those surveyed said that they had been drinking in a bar or tavern before driving, accounting for the largest type of venue attended by those who admitted to drinking and driving.

AAA’s findings are consistent with the Wisconsin Department of Health Service’s 2016 Wisconsin Epidemiological Profile on Alcohol and Other Drug Use that indicates young adults are more likely to drink and drive after leaving a bar.

Wisconsin Residents Respond to DUI Enforcement and Penalties

Many residents of Wisconsin feel that the penalties for drunk driving are too lenient, especially compared to other states.

AAA found that Wisconsinites believe drunk driving is a large concern in their state and that police officers and DUI laws do not do enough to deter people from engaging in the behavior.

Only 38 percent of Wisconsin residents surveyed believe that street-level enforcement of drunk driving laws was adequate and 29 percent of those surveyed view current court handlings of impaired-driving cases to properly address the problem.
