It has been a deadly year thus far for Wisconsin, with more traffic deaths recorded in the first sixth months of 2015 than when compared to this time last year.
The increase has prompted the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) to increase safety efforts and to ask the public for help in doing so.
At the law offices of Pitman, Kalkhoff, Sicula & Dentice, our team of legal professionals are dedicated to defending the rights of the injured. We have seen first-hand the devastation that can result from a car accident.
According to WisDOT, 239 people have been killed in Wisconsin auto accidents thus far this year, compared to 207 people who were killed this time last year.
Overall, traffic fatalities are down. Last year there were a total of 496 traffic fatalities, which is the lowest number of deaths for the state in over 70 years. WisDOT hopes to keep that all-time low and prevent further increases.
Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Nate Henriksen, says that many of these deaths are preventable, and that is why the state is asking all motorists to take an active role in making roads safer. A few things you can do include:
Dont drink and drive
Dont speed
Dont use your cellphone while behind the wheel
Get plenty of sleep before driving
The Department says that more than half of Wisconsin traffic fatalities occur when vehicles run off the road.
To combat this, the Department is planning to add more rumble strips along highways. These strips can warn driver when they are drifting out of their lane, and will hopefully alert distracted, drunk and drowsy drivers who tend to drift in and out of their lanes most.
