After joining 38 other states whose maximum speed limit is 70 mph, signs began changing on the interstate around mid-June. From June through September the number of car accidents have increased by 13 percent when compared to last year. Collisions have increased by 16 percent when compared to 2013.
The increased number of collisions means that more people are also getting hurt. Accident injuries have increased by seven percent since 2013. These numbers are disconcerting as winter weather could lead to even more accidents on ice and snow-covered roads.
Fatalities have also been on the rise. In the four months since the speed limit increase, interstate fatalities totaled 15; in 2014, the number of fatalities during the same time period was 10.
Unfortunately, there is no clear indication for what is causing the uptick in collisions. According to local police, many drivers were already traveling at 70 mph despite a speed limit of 65 mph. However, those that were used to driving the speed limit or below may be the cause for the increase in accidents. As traffic builds up due to slower travelers, the chances of an accident increase. Furthermore, as gas prices have decreased, more people are on the roads which can also lead to more crashes.
The 70 mph signs are being installed in Walworth County and Washington County in the next few weeks.
