Boat-Related Deaths on the Rise This Year

Boating-related death totals have increased significantly this year versus the same time period in 2015. A dozen more deaths have occurred in the past five months.

In 2015, only one boating death occurred in the state before Memorial Day, allowing for a total of 21 fatalities for the entire year. In only five months, 13 deaths have occurred this year.

Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports that a staggering 85 percent of this year’s boating-related fatality victims were not wearing a life jacket.

Improving Boater Safety

The Wisconsin DNR is focusing on improving boater safety, which the agency believes will save lives. The Kids Don’t Float campaign aims to inform the public as to why life jackets and practicing boater safety are so important.

According to state law, one floatation device must be on board for every person on the boat. The DNR operates a number of locations throughout Wisconsin where boaters can borrow a life jacket for the day if necessary.

Before departing, always inspect your boat to make sure the proper safety gear is on board and to review boating safety rules.

Boaters are advised to use life jackets correctly; they need to be worn, not simply available.

Boating safety courses are available to teach all boaters, novice to experienced, about the safety rules associated with operating a boat and riding as a responsible passenger.

The U.S. Coast Guard also provides free vessel safety checks to determine if your boat is equipped with legally required safety equipment and that it is in good condition. Online safety checks are also available through the Coast Guard.
