Wisconsin’s Department of Revenue Warns of COVID-19 Related Scams

On March 31st, the State of Wisconsin’s Department of Revenue (DOR) released a bulletin warning of scams related to COVID-19 and urging taxpayers to be mindful of not sharing personal information over the phone, through text, or via email. This includes some helpful information for Wisconsin residents waiting for stimulus payments from the IRS.

Peter Barca, who serves as the Secretary of the DOR, says that the IRS nor his department will never reach out for any personal or banking information.

Many scammers are trying to defraud taxpayers by mentioning the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act or CARES Act and asking for personally identifiable information in order for these people to receive their stimulus checks. If someone is asking for your personal details, Barca asks that you hang up if you get a call, do not respond to emails or delete texts you receive.
