In the October issue of PKSD’s newsletter, You Should Know, our attorneys explain the importance of doing a Fall safety check to help avoid three of the most common household dangers: fires, falls and firearms.
These dangers often cause unintentional injuries that lead to tens of thousands of deaths each year. The National Safety Council reports that 146,571 people were killed by unintentional injuries in 2015 alone.
This month’s newsletter explains some of the steps you can take to help reduce your risk of injury from these three common household dangers.
Fires
There were more than 380,000 residential fires in 2015, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
One of the most common causes of a household fire is cooking in the kitchen. You can reduce the risk by maintaining a three-foot safe zone between combustible items and your stove. Combustible items include things like cookbooks and kitchen towels that can ignite quickly.
The newsletter also covers some of the other causes of fires and what you can do to prevent them, such as preventing lint buildup in your clothes dryer.
Falls
Falls are the leading cause of injury and death among Americans who are 65 years old or older, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
One of the main things you and your loved ones can do to reduce the risk of a fall is to remove clutter, such as clothing, from walkways in the home. These are some of the most common tripping hazards in the home.
Firearms
You should exercise great care with storing of guns and other firearms. This includes storing all unloaded firearms in a locked cabinet, safe or gun vault that children cannot access.
This month’s newsletter contains many more tips on things you can do to help reduce the risk of unintentional injury in the home from fires, falls and firearms. You can learn more about these issues and others by subscribing to PKSD’s newsletter.
Unfortunately, no matter how cautious you are, injuries can still occur. If your injury was caused by another person’s negligence, you may have legal options.
