A tragic and fatal crash that took place April 4 highlights the importance of obeying all traffic signals in our area.
Authorities say that at 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, one drivers failure to stop at a red light near the 7600 block of W. Good Hope Road caused a collision with a car traveling southbound on N. 76th Street.
That crash resulted in one death. The passenger riding in the car that was struck was taken to a local hospital but died shortly thereafter. Police have said only that the passenger was a 66-year-old resident of Milwaukee and have not yet issued an identification of the passenger or the two drivers.
Officials do not know what caused the crash at this point, though they continue to investigate the accident. Milwaukee police say that it is unlikely alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision. Both drivers remained on the scene after the crash occurred.
Besides being a reckless and dangerous decision to make, red light-running is illegal in Wisconsin.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that drivers failing to stop at a red light is the leading cause of urban crashes, and the financial cost to the public is estimated to be roughly $14 billion per year. The problem is not just costly, it is completely avoidable.
If you or someone you love was struck by a driver who ran a solid red light, you may have grounds to file a lawsuit.
