Homicide charges were filed yesterday in the death of 18-year-old Emily Hughes, a Sheboygan gas station clerk who was killed when a van crashed into the store where she was working.
Authorities say 32-year-old Jeremy Pfister of Sheboygan had just filled up. He was backing up his van to pick up his wife at the gas station door and backed into the wall. Hughes was pinned underneath the vehicle and later died at a local hospital.
Pfister originally told authorities that the brakes on his 2008 minivan were to blame for sending his vehicle through the stores wall. However, earlier this week, Pfister came clean and told police that he had just moved his child to the back seat, got into the passenger side of the van and tried to operate the van using his left foot to operate the gas and brake pedal.
Authorities determined Hughes death was a homicide after carefully reconstructing the scene, investigating the van and reviewing the surveillance tape.
He is facing negligent operation of a vehicle.
