Car manufacturer Kia is recalling approximately 209,000 Soul and Soul EV hatchback vehicles for a flaw which may cause the accelerator pedal to break during use, increasing the risk of accident.
Kia Motors America claims no crashes or injuries have resulted from the defect at this time.
The recalled models were built between July 21, 2013 and Jan. 8, 2015, and the announcement does affect both electric and gas models of the Soul and Soul EV. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration determined that the unsupported part of the pedal is likely to bend and break when “excessive” force is applied.
To solve the problem, owners should return their vehicle to a dealer immediately for installation of a rubber support component which Kia says will prevent the gas pedal from breaking or bending.
This fix will be completely free to owners of the recalled Kias.
Kia will begin officially notifying owners on March 24, but in the meantime, the automaker is urging consumers to call Kia at 800-333-4542 refer to recall #SC116 for more information.
