Thanks to record-low gas prices, AAA expects an additional 700,000 people will travel for the long weekend compared to last year. Drivers can expect to pay the lowest in gas prices for a Memorial Day weekend since 2005. Because of this, 55 percent of Americans are planning to take a road trip this year.
Marked as the unofficial start to summer, AAA President and CEO noted that millions of Americans are eagerly awaiting the start of summer and are ready to kick-off summer with a Memorial Day weekend getaway.
According to AAA, the majority of travelers, 34 million or 89 percent, will drive to their destination. That marks a 2.1 percent increase over the number of motorists last year. The number of people traveling by air is expected to increase 1.6 percent. However, the number of people traveling by cruises, buses or trains will decline by 2.3 percent.
Thanks to the increased number of motorists expected to be on the roads, AAA expects to rescue more than 350,000 travelers for being locked out of their vehicles or suffering from dead batteries and flat tires.
If you are planning to set out on a holiday weekend road trip, make sure to give your vehicle a thorough check, including checking your battery and tires before hitting the road.
