Multi-Car Crash in Parking Lot Raises Questions About Elderly Drivers

When a 92-year-old man hit nine parked cars in a Piggly Wiggly parking lot on Feb. 13, many people began to ask whether that driver should still be allowed to take the wheel.
The accident took place around noon on Friday in Mayville, when an elderly driver attempted to exit the grocery store parking lot and suddenly lost control of his vehicle, careening into a group of other cars. No one was injured, but four of the vehicles struck by the man had to be towed. No charges were filed against the man, but the incident raises the question, how old is too old to drive?
The issue is a complex one, and many believe it should be tackled on an individual basis. If a persons cognitive skills, sight and reaction time are still sharp, is it fair to revoke their driving privileges simply because of their age?
The question may stir a great deal of emotion, which is why it is oftentimes helpful to get the state Department of Transportation involved. The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles provides resources for aging motorists, such as transportation for qualifying individuals to and from appointments, work-related activities and more.
It is important to help your aging relative transition into the next phase of life with dignity and confidence, and initiating this very conversation with your elderly loved one could help keep them safe from harm while doing the same for other drivers. Accidents are more likely to occur when a driver is distracted or unable to focus completely on the task at hand, for any number of reasons.
A driver of any age can be found liable for damages in an accident. If you or someone you love was injured because of another persons negligence, you deserve honest and straightforward representation.
