The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is raising the bar on safety with the recent announcement of drastic changes to the 5-Star Safety Ratings system. The safety regulator is placing a new focus on safety through technology with the addition of several new proposals for crash-test rating criteria.
The new system is set to go into effect for 2019 model year vehicles and will focus on three main areas: crash worthiness, pedestrian safety and the implementation of crash avoidance technology. The agency will also move to the use of half-star increments to better differentiate between vehicle performances.
A new crash test will include the addition of oblique frontal crashes in an effort to address the most dangerous type of frontal accident. The crash is meant to replicate a crash scenario in which an oncoming vehicle has crossed over the center lane.
A brand new crash test dummy will also be able to provide improved data on the effects of a car accident on passengers. The dummy more closely mimics a human body in its flexibility and bendable neck.
As pedestrian accidents continue to rise, the NHTSA has placed a new focus on the ability of vehicles to cause less injury in the case of an accident. A new test will measure how well vehicles are able to protect pedestrians from head, pelvic and leg injuries.
The program will also take into account whether or not a vehicle has pedestrian crash avoidance technology.
The most significant change for the new safety system is its focus on the integration of new advanced crash-avoidance technology. The recommended safety features will include forward and rear-facing cameras, lane departure warnings, as well as forward collision warnings.
The proposal will also enable the system to be easily updated as new safety technologies emerge.
