The results are in from a Milwaukee County Sheriffs initiative to keep the public safe from impaired drivers over the New Years holiday weekend. Fourteen first offenders and one repeat offender were arrested.
David Clarke, Milwaukee County Sheriff, mandated additional law enforcement patrols from December 31, 2015 to January 3, 2016 to be out in force protecting Milwaukee citizens from drivers under the influence of alcohol.
From Thursday at 2 p.m. to Sunday at 6 a.m., the following citations, arrests and calls for service came into the Sheriffs Office:
One drunk driving related accident
47 excessive speeding citations
Four personal injury crashes
14 DUIs
Seven property crashes resulting in property damage
16 warrant-related arrests
3 seat belt violations
Along with additional arrests and violations
Fortunately, there were no fatal accidents over the holiday weekend.
Eight of the above drunk driving arrests were on the holiday, with the first driver being arrested at 1 a.m. on Friday.
Impaired driving is a problem in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 30 Americans a day are killed by drunk drivers, which is about one death every 51 minutes. Along with loss of life, the CDC estimates alcohol-related collisions cost an excess of $59 billion per year.
Driving drunk can impact more than the impaired person behind the wheel. It can affect the drunk drivers family, victims and their families, along with property damage.
