Death and Illness linked to Listeria at Wisconsin’s Crave Brothers Cheese

One death, a pregnant woman’s miscarriage and three hospitalizations are being linked to contaminated soft cheese from Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese Co. in Waterloo.

The nationwide recall includes Les Freres, Petit Frere and Petit Frere with Truffles. Consumers are instructed to throw away any remaining cheeses.

• Les Freres (LF225 2/2.5#) with a make date of 7-1-13 or prior, packaged in white plastic with a green and gold label.
• Petit Frere (PF88 8/8 oz) with a make date of 7-1-13 or prior, packaged in small round wooden boxes.
• Petit Frere with Truffles (PF88T 8/8 oz) with a make date of 7-1-13 or prior, packaged in small round wooden boxes.

Testing done by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes at two retail stores. The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows: Illinois (1), Indiana (1), Minnesota (2), and Ohio (1).

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it typically takes two to three weeks between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported. Pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at highest risk for serious and sometimes fatal infections.

These products were distributed nationwide. Whole Foods, Krogers and Roundys all carried the recalled cheese.
