According to police, a 2015 Lexus R350 ran a red light on southbound North 2nd and West Clybourn streets and struck a Ford Fusion that was operating as an Uber at the time. After the collision, the driver of the Lexus and a male occupant fled the scene on foot.
Two women who were rear passengers in the Uber vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. A third passenger, who was also seated in the backseat, was transported to the hospital where she died from her injuries.
The 41-year-old Uber driver was also transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The medical examiner’s report showed that the women were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. They were in their 30s and were visiting Milwaukee from Chicago.
According to court records, the driver of the Lexus had a history of driving violations. Reports indicate that the 23-year-old was arrested in January 2015 for drunk driving. His license was revoked in August 2015, yet he was caught pulling out of his driveway just 10 days later and was charged with operating a vehicle with a suspended license.
The cause of the accident remains unknown as the investigation is ongoing.
