New Quality Measures for Five-Star Nursing Home Scores

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid announced it will be implementing five new quality measures into the Five-Star Quality nursing home rating system this July.

The initial phase is anticipated to begin on July 27, but the new measures will not bear the full weight of impacting nursing homes’ rankings until January 2017, according to the survey’s technical director.

The five new measures will take into account the percentages of:

• Short-stay residents who experienced an outpatient ER visit
• Short-stay residents who were discharged to the community in a successful manner
• Short-stay residents who were hospitalized again after admission to a nursing home
• Short-stay residents who improved in mobility and physical function
• Long-stay residents whose mobility worsened

The new measures will aid in the collection of data that will be used to assess quality measure scores published on the Nursing Home Compare website. This website gives nursing homes ratings between one and five stars based on each facility’s performance on key quality indicators from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid.
