As you know, on Friday, Milwaukee’s new streetcar, The Hop MKE, will begin to operate downtown and in some of the areas surrounding downtown. This is an exciting time for businesses and people who frequent the downtown area.
There will still be cars on the road in the downtown area though. This is why drivers need to know the risks of driving when there are streetcars. They should also learn what they can do to lower the chances of a crash that could cause injuries to themselves or occupants of streetcars.
PKSD attorney Jeff Pitman has made a video offering four simple strategies for road safety if you are driving near a streetcar.
There is also a website for The Hop MKE that has a section on safety tips for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.
For example, motorcyclists need to cautious around the streetcar tracks, as these could easily cause a crash. Riders should try to go over the tracks at the sharpest angle possible – a 90-degree angle is preferable. Motorcyclists should not ride on the rails because the wheels can lose traction.
Pedestrians need to avoid crossing the street in front of a streetcar and wait for appropriate traffic signals.
Meanwhile, drivers should be careful about driving and parking when streetcars are nearby. For instance, drivers should make sure their entire vehicle is out of the path of a streetcar when they park. Drivers need to check before opening their doors because a streetcar could be coming up behind them.
Drivers also need to check for pavement markings that say when to stop before a crosswalk to give streetcars space in front of them.
