Wisconsin is the only state where a first drunk driving offense is not a crime.
It is merely a traffic ticket.
Although we have the highest rate of drunken driving in the nation and almost 45 percent of all traffic related deaths are alcohol related, the legislation is unwilling to follow along with the other states.
In 2006, MADD started the campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving and we experienced a 25 percent drop in drunken driving deaths nationwide through 2011. Unfortunately, in 2012 that percentage has risen about 10 percent. It is expected to rise as the economy improves.
