2019 justice served awardsEvery year, the You Should Know newsletter by PKSD and its provider Voice2News, recognizes those who have gone above and beyond to make America a safer and more just nation.

Known as the 2019 Justice Served Awards, we take the time in this issue to showcase the remarkable stories of certain individuals who have courageously stood up against powerful entities or organizations and helped hold them legally accountable for their negligent actions.

The Wisconsin personal injury lawyers at our firm are committed to protecting the rights of injured victims and their families. We are especially proud to celebrate those who make a difference within the justice system.

Baby Powder Linked to Lung Cancer

A mother and former massage school manager was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare and terminal form of lung cancer, from using Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder on a daily basis in the late 90s. Unable to definitively link her illness to the risk of asbestos in the product at the time, her lawsuit was dropped. However, decades later, thousands of lawsuits have now been filed against Johnson & Johnson.

Cancer Risk in Roundup Weed Killer

When a school groundskeeper was diagnosed with terminal non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, it was determined that years of using the Roundup weed killer exposed him to a deadly carcinogen. He filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer, Monsanto, for failing to warn about the dangers of its pesticide.

After several years, the jury awarded him a $289 million verdict in August 2018. His story and settlement has since paved the way for hundreds of other cancer-stricken people to attempt to hold the manufacturer responsible for their pain and suffering.

USA Gymnastics Sexual Abuse Scandal

A former gymnast was sexually abused by a physician for the U.S. women’s national gymnastics team. Unable to speak out publicly for almost two decades, she kept notes of her interactions with the doctor as well as medical records from her visits. She found her voice and chose to share her story after a 2016 investigation on the USA Gymnastics’ broken policies for handling sexual abuse. Her bravery helped many other victims come forward and resulted in the federal conviction of the physician.

Fraudulent Blood-Testing Startup Exposed

A former Theranos employee and grandson of a member of the board of directors decided to expose the start-up company for fraud after claiming to have developed a revolutionary blood-testing machine. The machine, also known as the Theranos Edison, was supposed to perform a multitude of blood tests with just the prick of a finger. Despite obtaining millions from investors, it was all uncovered to be a scam.

The employee alerted the authorities on different questionable practices, which were later confirmed to be deceitful. A reporter also investigating the case found that blood tests were being done by other machines and that the tests conducted by Theranos resulted in diagnostic errors for thousands of patients. Following the initial revelation, the founder of the company was indicted on multiple charges.
